The "History of the Langobards" (or "Lombards") by Paul the Deacon is one of the most important sources for the early history of Europe. Writing in the late 8th century, the author traces the history of his own people, Lombards, and intertwines it with history of Rome and of the rising Frankish kingdom. It represents one of the most important links between the Antiquity and the Middle Ages.
